Tips for Moving into a New Home

Moving into a new home is more than just packing and unpacking your things. There is just so much to consider to make sure everything is well and good inside and out of your new abode. As the homeowner, you have to get associated with your house. You have to learn how it functions and plan which projects you want to tackle, based on the order of urgency and importance. Do it all right when you move in and don’t wait and assume to figure it all out later on to avoid bigger problems in the future.

Here are some tips for moving into your new home, so you’ll finally be able to just sit back, relax, and celebrate your milestone.

Make yourself familiar with the neighborhood.

Go for a walk. To become more familiar with the outlay of the area, make a casual stroll through the nearby streets. This will help you recognize features such as parks, intersections, establishments and other important locations. Do a walkthrough.

After getting familiar with your new place, make yourself familiar with your new home by doing a walkthrough when it is completely empty. Before unpacking and setting up your furniture, take a look around.  If you are renting your new space or buying a second hand house, make sure everything that has to be included in the sale or in the contract is present and all requested and agreed upon repairs have been made by the owner or the previous owner. If it is a brand new house,  check if everything inside and outside the house is in working order as agreed upon on the contract to sell.

Make sure all utilities are set-up.

Your utilities are the things that make your life inside the house better and more comfortable. It enhances the quality of your life and also of your job or work especially during this time that a work-from-home set up is popular. It is best to take care of arranging for your utilities before moving in to your new home. This way, you make sure that everything is working properly such as the very basic – electric, gas, water, heating and cooling, phone, and internet set ups.

Change or re-key your locks.

Whether you are buying or renting your new home, changing the locks on your house is always a must. You have no idea how many copies of the house keys are floating around out there from, so changing the locks will keep your new house more secure. Changing the locks whenever you move to a new home is always good practice. As they always say – it’s better to be safe than sorry. You can change the locks yourself or if you want better and more secure locks, ask help from a professional locksmith. Changing or re-keying the locks on all doors and on the windows of your home is a small expense to pay for a lot of peace of mind.

Start with a clean state, do a deep clean.

This is probably the last thing you want to do after going through the moving process.  Cleaning your new home from top to bottom ensures that your home is free from bacteria, germs, allergens and other harmful things that might affect your day to day experience inside your new home. If you don’t have the time to do it yourself, consider calling in professional cleaners instead. Starting out life in your new home in a clean state will mean a lot to you.

Moving into a new home is overwhelming and can be stressful. Doing the tips above can help make the transition a bit more seamless.
